For someone constantly on the move, exploring new destinations is a passion that fuels my wanderlust. After traversing through many corners of incredible India, I decided to venture off the beaten path and uncover a lesser-known jewel – Wayanad, a picturesque district nestled in the verdant landscapes of Kerala.
While Wayanad may not be a familiar name to many, a quick online search unveils a treasure trove of information about this hidden paradise. Inspired by the allure of the unknown, I planned a three-day weekend road trip with friends, a much-needed respite from the hustle of our office routines.
Our journey commenced in Bangalore, where we embarked on a 280-kilometer self-driven adventure, courtesy of Zoomcar. The well-paved roads promised a smooth ride as we navigated through Mysore, Najangood, Gundalpet, and finally reached our destination, Sultan Batheri in Wayanad.
Upon arrival, we checked into the Whispering Woods Farm Resort, a serene abode with cozy cottage-style rooms and exceptionally hospitable staff – a place I highly recommend for anyone visiting Wayanad.
With limited time in hand, we wasted no time in exploring the region's hidden gems. Wayanad boasts a plethora of breathtaking attractions, and we made sure to visit some of the most captivating ones, including the magnificent Soochippara Falls (Sentinel Rock Waterfall), the enigmatic Edakkal Caves, the awe-inspiring Banasura Sagar Dam, and the towering Banasura Hill.
The Edakkal Caves, located in Kalpetta, offered a unique trekking experience. After a 2-3 kilometer hike and a 45-minute uphill climb, we were rewarded with a glimpse into the past – rock walls adorned with Stone Age carvings, ancient weapons, symbols, and crude animal and human figures, a testament to the region's rich history.
As the sun set, we retreated to the resort, indulging in a sumptuous dinner and basking in the warmth of a crackling bonfire.
The following day, we ventured to the Soochippara Falls, also known as the Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, a natural wonder surrounded by towering hills and dense forests. Soochipara is undoubtedly one of Wayanad's most captivating tourist spots.
Our journey then led us to the Banasura Sagar Dam, an important tourist attraction located around 20 kilometers from Kalpetta. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Banasura Hill, the dam offered a tranquil respite amidst the region's natural splendor.
Wayanad, a hidden gem that deserves to be unveiled, promises an unforgettable experience for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. With its rich history, natural wonders, and serene ambiance, this destination has etched itself into my memory as a true paradise worth exploring.
